Rural Health Careers Camp

NIU Campus to again host the Rural Health Careers Camp
For the sixth straight summer, Northern Illinois University (NIU) will be the host site for the Rural Health Careers Camp.  The three-day camp, to be held June 8 June 10, is intended for high school students residing in rural areas who have a budding interest in the health professions.  The camp is a partnership between NIUs College of Health and Human Services, the National Center for Rural Health Professions (NCRHP) located at the University of Illinois Rockford, and the Illinois Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Polo site.

The purpose of the Rural Health Careers Camp is to provide rural high school students with a hands-on learning experience about different health professions careers, and to show them the opportunities available in health professions. Students will also receive information about education and training, academic requirements, financial aid, and campus life. The faculty for the camp is comprised of health professions faculty, health professionals currently in practice, and health professions college students.

Current rural high school freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are eligible to apply to the camp. Priority will be given to freshmen and sophomores from the 19 counties of the Northern Illinois Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Region Counties including: Boone, Bureau, Carroll, DeKalb, Henderson, Henry, JoDaviess, Knox, LaSalle, Lee, Mercer, Ogle, Putnam, Rock Island, Stark, Stephenson, Warren, Whiteside and Winnebago.

Interested students should contact Vicki Weidenbacher-Hoper at vweide1@uic.edu for an application.  If you have any questions, please contact Vicki at the above e-mail or call 815-395-5854.
