Research Support Services

Research Support Services (RSS) lends administrative support to the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford’s research review boards, as well as educational training and assistance to faculty and students on the Rockford campus. COM-R is federally required to register expert committees with the regulatory agencies that are responsible for the review and approval of various types of research conducted on the campus or other locations by university faculty and students.

The primary focus of RSS is to support the Institutional Review Board (IRB) that oversees all human subject research on the Rockford campus or in any of the Rockford affiliated clinics. Also, human subject research conducted by faculty, staff or students must be reviewed by the COM-R IRB when they are the Primary Investigator (PI) or a collaborator with other institutions using their UIC affiliation. For details concerning what protocols need to be reviewed by the COM-R IRB please review “Rules of Engagement.”

Other federally required research committees:
  • Biological Research Committee (BRC) reviews all animal research protocols.
  • Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) review is required by federally funded protocols (i.e. NIH). This committee must meet the detailed requirements that are determined by the funding source.
  • Embryonic Stem Cell Research Oversight Committee (ESCRO) oversees any protocols using human embryonic stem cells (hES).
  • Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) reviews any research protocol using recombinant DNA or infectious agents.
  • Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) reviews all protocols that use radioactive materials.
