Ramaswamy to receive 2009 UIC INSPIRE Award

Rockford, IL - Ramaswamy Kalyanasundarum, PhD, professor and head of the department of biomedical sciences at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford, has been selected to receive a 2009 UIC INSPIRE Award. The award is given by the University of Illinois Alumni Association based on one’s integrity, nurture, service, pride, intellect, respect and excellence.
Martin Lipsky, MD, Dean, College of Medicine at Rockford says, “Ramaswamy excels in all categories. He serves as a mentor for junior faculty members, identifies sources of funding, and develops exciting new programs. He strengthened a 20-year partnership with ThermoFisher Scientific, which allows high school students and teachers hands-on research opportunities in the laboratory of a research scientist. He further expanded the program a couple of years ago by implementing a SMaRT program to provide similar opportunities for college students interested in careers in medicine or science.”
Additionally, he was the pivotal force for the new master's of science in medical biotechnology at the Rockford campus, which will support community and regional industries and will lead to a new generation of scientists. Originally trained as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, he switched careers and pursued a doctorate in microbiology and tropical medicine when he immigrated to North America. He currently serves as a section leader for the National Institutes of Health, an honor given only to senior scientists who have made significant research contributions.
