College of Medicine researcher speaks at NIH Conference

Rockford, IL - Mian-Ying Wang, MD, research associate professor in the department of pathology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford, gave a presentation entitled “Morinda citrifolia (noni) and Cancer Prevention” at the National Cancer Institute’s Office of Cancer Complementary and Alternative Medicine (OCCAM) in Bethesda, MD, on Wednesday, June 10, 2009. There was an open discussion following her presentation. She also met and talked with Jeffrey White, MD, director of  OCCAM and, John A. Milner, PhD, chief of nutritional science research group, Division of Cancer Prevention, National Cancer Institute (NIH); the director of Wang’s research program.

Wang has been researching the Morinda citrifolia (noni) plant for 10 years. Locally, she has conducted a study to examine the effects of Tahitian Noni Juice on the symptoms and quality of life of patients with osteoarthritis of the hip and/or knee. Wang has conducted the following clinical trials:
1.                   Cancer prevention of Morinda citrifolia (noni) in current smokers.
2.                   Effects of Morinda citrifolia (noni) on quality of life and auditory function in postmenopausal women.
3.                   Impacts of Morinda citrifolia on the quality of life of osteoarthritis patients.
4.                   Liver protective effects of Morinda citrifolia.
5.                   Cardiovascular disease prevention of Morinda citrifolia in current smokers.
6.                   Morinda citrifolia challenges aspirin.

Scientific studies within the last few decades have shown that the juice made from Noni fruit may possess several healing properties such as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-congestive, hypotensive and anti-cancer effects. Noni has received increased attention recently from modern herbalists, medical physicians, and high-tech biochemists.

The University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford has served the Rockford area since 1971 and provides university level care at its clinics, which are located in Rockford, Rockton, Belvidere and Mt. Morris.
