Curriculum: Second-Year Residency (R2)

AMBULATORY PEDIATRICS — 1 block
Valuable experience in the office management of pediatric problems
Curricular focus on adolescent health and pediatric behavior disorders including eating, depression and ADHD

BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE — 2 weeks
Work with psychiatrist on a busy outpatient service
Observe psychotherapy with the UI Health L.P. Johnson Family Health Center behavioral health team

COMMUNITY MEDICINE — 2 weeks
A variety of experiences are available, including rural practice opportunity, home health care and substance abuse
Participation in management of hospice patients
Exposure to community homeless shelter medical care and STD clinic in jail setting
Opportunity to give community education lectures

ELECTIVE — 2 weeks
Opportunity to cater to special interests, e.g., anesthesiology, wound care, headache, neurology, pain management,
pulmonary, urgent care, OMT, woman’s health, integrative medicine or physical therapy
Devoted to specific interests of residents

FAMILY MEDICINE INPATIENT SERVICE — 1 block
Responsibility for inpatient care of UI Health L.P. Johnson Family Health Center patients
Experience supervising residents for inpatient services to enhance own learning and teaching skills
OB deliveries/availability for emergent OB cases
Bedside teaching rounds for residents and medical students

GASTROENTEROLOGY — 1 block
Assessment and management of GI problems
Consultation service from large specialty group noted for outstanding teaching

ICU — 1 block
Management of a broad range of critical care problems
Mechanical ventilator management
Procedural skills including intubation, thoracentesis and placement of central and arterial lines

INFECTIOUS DISEASE — 1 block
Full management of critically ill patients acting as consultant with specialist support
Sharpen skills of diagnosis of infectious disease including use of microbiology laboratory
One-on-one discussions with ID faculty
Weekly ID resident/student presentations

MEDICINE AND OB — 2 blocks
Responsible for inpatient care of UI Health L.P. Johnson Family Health Center patients including obstetrics patients
General medicine patients who represent a typical family physician’s service
Daily rounds with attending physicians

OBSTETRICS — 2 blocks
Weekly morning report OB conference with all residents
Increased case complexity

PEDIATRIC ER/NICU — 1 block
High volume peds ER

NICU Level II and III experience

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT — 2 weeks
Expertise coding –
highly rated opportunity for learning a variety of billing and Medicare compliance issues
Exposure to new model of family medicine
Work with UI Health L.P. Johnson Family Health Center clinic manager and Operations Committee to develop a
practice plan and participate in quality review process
Opportunity to focus experience in areas of resident interest

UI HEALTH L.P. JOHNSON FAMILY HEALTH CENTER
Three half-days per week in the health center
Further development of a panel of health center patients
Increased office procedures
Videotaping and case reviews done regularly
