Requirements of the Phase 2 and Phase 3 Curriculum

During Phase 2 and Phase 3 medical students are able to take electives in order to engage in career exploration. In Phase 2, students are allocated 4 weeks of time to complete electives. Electives form the building block of the Phase 3 curriculum. Across Phase 2 and Phase 3, a student will complete 82 total credit hours.

The Phase 2 curriculum consists of 7 core clerkship rotations totaling 44 weeks (Medicine (8), Surgery (8), OB/GYN (6), Family Medicine (6), Psychiatry (6), Pediatrics (6), Neurology (4)). Students may also take electives during times that they are not enrolled in core clerkships. Upon successful completion of all 7 core clerkships, a student is considered a Phase 3 student.

All Phase 3 students must complete a 4-week sub-internship and 2 weeks of Transition to Residency. Students who are in the RMED program must also complete 16 weeks of RMED immersion, 2 weeks of COPC research, and 18 weeks of free electives. Students who are not in the RMED program must also complete 12 weeks of patient interacting electives and 24 weeks of free electives. The 12 weeks of patient interacting electives must occur in their M4 year.

Students should work with representatives from the Office of Student Affairs and Office of Medical Education and Evaluation to choose electives.
