Narrative Description: This elective will include working with Dr. Ryan Enke of Ortholllinois for a two week or four week interval focusing on outpatient Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. During this time, the student will learn and demonstrate the skills needed for effective evaluation of musculoskeletal physical complaints patients present with. The student will have the opportunity to present patients to Dr. Enke and discuss the assessment and plan of patients. During this time, the student will also be able to closely observe multiple diagnostic procedures such as EMGs and nerve conduction studies and will gain knowledge in the administration and interpretation of these tests. The student will also be able to observe a variety of musculoskeletal injections and will learn proper technique and indications for each type of injection.

Learning Objectives: At the completion of this elective, the student will be able to:

  1. Describe and demonstrate the skills used to evaluate for acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions in patients throughout all age ranges.
  2. Describe and understand evaluation for pain management including medications, common modalities such as therapies, and procedures such as various injections.
  3. Identify the principles behind diagnostic modalities used within PM&R such as EMGs and nerve conduction studies.
  4. Demonstrate basic knowledge of musculoskeletal and nervous system anatomy of the human body.
  5. Develop a greater proficiency in performing a musculoskeletal physical exam.

Learning Activities:

Primary learning activities will include bedside teaching, case discussions, hands-on physical examination, patient assessment, and journal article discussions.

Method of Assessment:

For the 2-week course, students will receive a grade of Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory. For the 4-week course, students will receive a grade of either Honors, High Pass, Pass, or Unsatisfactory. Students will be assessed as follows:

  1. The faculty preceptor will evaluate the student’s performance in the areas of professionalism, clinical knowledge, patient interaction, and level of interest.
  2. The student will receive regular verbal feedback throughout the elective.
  3. Standard UIC evaluation form will be completed and submitted at the end of the clerkship.

Required Reading: Provided during rotation.
