Narrative Description: This elective is designed to provide a concentrated 2- or 4-week experience in the selection and conduct of anesthesia by assigning the student to one or more anesthesiology preceptors. This will best assure a broad exposure to the clinical problems unique to this specialty. Attention will be given to the preoperative evaluation of the patient, the actual conduct of the anesthetic procedure, and postanesthetic management of routine and complicated patients. Different types of anesthesia and their unique applications will be covered. There will be opportunities to improve competence in the performance of basic clinical skills. The pharmacologic and physiologic properties of commonly used anesthetic agents will be covered. Appropriate management of postoperative pain and the psychological aspects of undergoing anesthesia and surgery will also be addressed. Most of the elective experience will occur in the operating room suite and its environs, including the postanesthesia care area and the intensive care setting.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Manage an airway with mask ventilation, laryngeal mask airway or endotracheal tube.
  2. Understand the risks of anesthesia for individual patients and recognize which patients require further workup prior to surgery.
  3. Understanding of the drug classes that are used in the OR on a regular basis and how they can affect the patient post-operatively.
  4. Understand the difference of general, regional, and monitored anesthesia care (MAC) anesthesia.
  5. Gain a knowledge base of the numerous therapies for the treatment of acute pain.

Learning Activities:

Each day the students are assigned to a particular OR or division of anesthesiology such as Pain, OB, and Regional. They will work with the assigned faculty member in that room and assist to the degree that the student is able, Pre-op H&P, placement of monitors, airway maintenance, hemodynamic control and anesthetic technique are all part of the usual day. Halfway through the rotation, experiences will be reviewed and any questions answered.

Method of Assessment: Direct faculty evaluation of performance.
