    Location: Mercyhealth Javon Bea Hospital NICU (8201 E Riverside Blvd, Rockford, IL 61103); UW Health Women and Children’s Hospital (1350 Charles St, Rockford, IL 61104)

Learning Objectives: To familiarize the student with the care of premature sick infants

Learning Activities:

  1. Follow 3-5 patients in NICU and attend high-risk deliveries or C-sections, go on transport.
  2. Become familiar with assessment of gestational age and condition at birth.
  3. Know how to resuscitate an infant.
  4. Become familiar with diagnosis and differential diagnosis of common problems of newborns.
  5. Be able to manage fluid, electrolyte and caloric intake.
  6. Become familiar with principles of ventilator use.
  7. Understand the multidisciplinary approach to the infant’s care.

Method of Assessment: Direct observation and direct faculty evaluation of performance

General Scheduling: Students will be with the Service Physician, who is the same person Monday-Friday.

Miscellaneous Information: No rotations on weekends or holidays. Students should not wear watches, rings, bracelets, or lab coats. Students should have clean, short, and unpainted fingernails. Business casual attire or scrubs are appropriate.
