Narrative Description: Students will work with various rheumatologists at the Rheumatology Clinic and accompany the doctor to the hospital to see inpatient consults.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn the spectrum of rheumatic diseases
  2. Obtain comfort with the musculoskeletal exam
  3. Observe/perform common rheumatology procedures
  4. Gain knowledge regarding common rheumatologic medications
  5. Hands-on experience with rheumatology diagnoses including, but not limited to rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, etc.

Learning Activities:

Students will get a hands-on experience on rheumatology patients with rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, gout, psoriasis arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and other rare diagnoses. Students are generally provided with literature about the variety of diagnoses using but not limited to the Rheumatology Secrets book.

Method of Assessment: Direct faculty evaluation of performance and standard UIC evaluation form completed and submitted.

Suggested Reading: Use of Up-to-Date is recommended to study the most common diagnoses in Rheumatology such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and osteoporosis.

General Scheduling: A schedule will provided to students two weeks prior to the rotation start date. The hours are typically Monday-Friday, 8-5pm.
