Narrative Description: The objectives of this elective will be to familiarize the student with diagnosis and management of urological problems in the ambulatory setting including the possibility of advanced study for students interested in pursuing residency in urology as a career.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Office evaluation and diagnosis of:
    1. Infection of the genitourinary tract
    2. Nephrolithiasis
    3. Malignancy of the prostate, bladder, testes, and kidneys
    4. Evaluation of hematuria
    5. Voiding dysfunction including BPH, neurogenic bladder, and incontinence
    6. Male infertility and erectile dysfunction
    7. Use of PSA in evaluating for prostate cancer
  2. Physical exam and anatomy and physiology of the genitourinary
  3. Treatment of genitourinary diagnoses in 1
  4. Surgical treatment of urological conditions and understanding of relevant anatomy intraoperatively

Learning Activities:

In clinical electives taken through the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford, registered students will participate in any combination of the following activities with the goal of positively impacting patient care and learning about patient conditions to achieve the course objectives. These activities include, but are not limited to: chart review, history elicitation of patients, physical exam, oral presentation, written documentation in the EHR, special topics presentations, procedural skills, participation in seminars/didactics/grand rounds, participation in development of assessment and plan for the care and treatment of patients, interpretation of patient findings either by exam or test results, literature review, case discussion, interprofessional care, simulations, and patient meetings. Students will engage in activities as directed and appropriately supervised by College Faculty.

General Scheduling: Students placed with Dr. Fumo will work Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays at the CGH Main Clinic in Sterling, IL and Thursdays and Fridays at Rockford Urological Associates in Rockford, IL. Students placed with Dr. Sadowski will work Monday-Friday at Rockford Urological Associates in Rockford, IL.
