Emeritus Status Awarded to College of Medicine Faculty Members

Three University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford faculty members recently received emeritus status from the University of Illinois Board of Trustees. Emeritus status is granted to those professors who have shown extraordinary service to the university for a number of years and recognizes that they will continue to be valued members of the college into their retirement.

Gary L. Anderson, M.D., is now an associate professor emeritus of clinical pathology. Anderson retired in September 2018 after 37 years as a faculty member and was chair of the Department of Pathology at the College of Medicine Rockford.

Samuel K. Appavu, M.D., is now professor emeritus of surgery and surgical specialties. Appavu retired in April 2019 as the chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgical Specialties.

John W. Seidlin, M.D., is now clinical associate professor emeritus of obstetrics and gynecology. Seidlin retired in January 2000.

  • Richard Novak, M.D., Professor Emeritus in the Department of Pathology
  • Neil Nusbaum, M.D., Professor Emeritus of Family and Community Medicine
  • Gary Rifkin, M.D., Professor Emeritus in the Department of Medicine and Medical Specialties
  • Thomas Root, M.D., Professor Emeritus in the Department of Medicine and Medical Specialties
