Dr. Neelu Puri’s Lung Cancer Research Lab receives $4,000 donation

Dr. Neelu Puri, an associate professor of biomedical sciences

The University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford received a $4,000 donation to further the lung cancer research of Dr. Neelu Puri, an associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences. The donation comes from Lace Up for Lori, a 5K run/walk that happened on Sunday, July 27, 2025. It paid tribute to the late Lori Jasper, who faced a brief battle with lung cancer before sadly passing away in 2024.

Family members presented a check and toured the research lab of Dr. Puri, who promotes lung cancer screening and is working to develop tests that can identify lung cancer in its early, more treatable stages.

Jasper was a wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend to all who knew her. She dedicated her life to serving others and was always eager to lend a helping hand, even at the expense of her own comfort. A retired 911 dispatcher and CPR instructor, she co-owned Northern Illinois CPR, where her commitment to saving lives shined brightly.
