Fourth-Year Medical Students Learn Residency Matches at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford

Fourth-year medical students took the next step to becoming doctors as they finally learned where they’ll attend residency during Match Day on Friday, March 20, 2026.

Medical students at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford, and across the nation, learned where they will spend the next three to seven years of medical training Match Day, which happened on Friday, March 20, 2026.

Fifty students from the Class of 2026 matched into residency programs in 16 specialties in 18 states. Fifty-eight percent of the Rockford students matched into primary care specialties, including family medicine, internal medicine, MedPeds and pediatrics. Twenty-one students will stay in Illinois for their residency programs.

“Match Day is a momentous occasion for our medical students after years of sacrifice and dedication,” says Trevonne M. Thompson, MD, MHPE, FACMT, dean of the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford. “To witness these students reach this milestone during my first week as dean is truly an honor.”

Fourth-year medical student Wills Andersen says Match Day is a day to celebrate the end of all the hard work and dedication over the last four years.

“Match day is the culmination of all our hard work these past four years, not just from students, but from the faculty at UICOMR, the physician mentors within the community, and all the NPs, APPs, nurses and other health care professionals who help guide medical students along this path,” he says. “I’m super excited to see where everyone ends up, and I’m so glad my classmates got to experience what Rockford has to offer and got the opportunity to serve its various communities.”
