Medical students presented research on health barriers among unhoused individuals
Janay Taylor and Luke Sclamberg, fourth-year medical students, presented findings from a collaborative research project to the Northern Illinois Homeless Coalition (NIHC) Board titled, “Assessing the Health of Unhoused Individuals in Rockford,” on Thursday, July 17, 2025. Their work, conducted under the guidance of faculty advisor Dr. Manu Khare, was informed by input from NIHC members and focused on identifying key barriers to accessing health care.
The presentation sparked a rich conversation among attendees from organizations serving Winnebago, Boone and DeKalb counties. Their findings highlighted the need for further exploration into health care access for unhoused populations and may help shape future initiatives.
“I’m truly grateful for the chance to present our research,” Janay says. “Through this project, I’ve gained a deep appreciation for the community’s strength and the significant obstacles they encounter. I’m hopeful that through continued collaboration and dedicated action, we can drive real change and create a future where everyone has access to the care and support they deserve.”
