New head of UICOMR Department of Psychiatry named

John S. Cummins, MD, MFA

The University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford is delighted to welcome John S. Cummins, MD, MFA, as the new head of the Department of Psychiatry.

A clinical assistant professor, Dr. Cummins completed medical school and a psychiatry residency at the University of Missouri School of Medicine in Columbia, Mo.

Dr. Cummins is currently medical director of the Rosecrance Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic for northern Illinois. Prior to this, they served as medical director of the state’s largest psychiatric hospital, Elgin Mental Health Center in Elgin, Ill., and served on committees focused on the medical staff organization, trans-affirming care, utilization review, competency /peer review, ethics, LGBTQIA+, and diversity and inclusion.

“Having served as a faculty member of schools of medicine at UIC, Rosalind Franklin and Loyola Universities, Dr. Cummins has a solid academic foundation as well as strong clinical and research experience that will be assets in this leadership position,” says Alex Stagnaro-Green, UICOMR dean.

“I’m also incredibly grateful to Dr. Geri Fox for serving as the chair since September 2018 and for helping with the search and transition to a new chair,” says Dr. Stagnaro-Green. Dr. Fox will continue on in an advising capacity for the next six months and plans to continue teaching and mentoring as well.
