Reflections on donor impact at Philanthropic Scholarship Dinner
The University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford marked a meaningful milestone on Friday, April 10, 2026, with its inaugural Philanthropic Scholarship Dinner, bringing together donors, students and campus leaders for an evening centered on gratitude, connection and shared purpose.
Director of Development David Eaton welcomed guests by underscoring the deeper meaning of scholarships — not simply as a means of financial support, but as powerful affirmations that students belong and are supported in their ambitions.
Assistant Dean Carol Schuster then introduced UICOMR’s new Regional Dean Dr. Trevonne Thompson, highlighting his distinguished career in emergency medicine, medical toxicology, academic leadership and global health. Dr. Thompson reflected on his own journey as a scholarship recipient, speaking candidly about how that support shaped his path. He also praised UICOMR students for their resilience, talent and commitment to service.
“Your impact echoes through every life they will touch,” he told the assembled donors.
Donor speaker Patti Werckle shared a moving tribute to her late husband, Dr. Mike Werckle, and the values that guided his life in medicine. Student speaker Megan Saltsgaver, a graduating M4, reflected on her path to residency and the critical role scholarships played along the way.
Together, their stories captured the spirit and purpose of the evening: the powerful launch of a new tradition, grounded in generosity and a shared investment in the future of medicine.
