UICOMR celebrated its first anniversary of the Neighborhood Health Hub partnership
The University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford celebrated the first anniversary of its Neighborhood Health Hub partnership with a special community health event on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2025, at the African-American Resource Center (AARC) at Booker, 524 Kent St., in Rockford.
The Neighborhood Health Hub is a program that brings medical students, resident physicians, faculty physicians and other health care partners to the AARC to provide free physical screenings, medication reviews, mental health screening and health education to all community residents. The event also included food boxes from the Northern Illinois Food Bank and nutrition education from the University of Illinois Extension.
Mayor Tom McNamara stopped by to show his support for the event.
The half-day service experience is offered to third-year medical students participating in the Family Medicine Clerkship, a community-engaged learning initiative developed by Dr. Aarohi Munshi, clerkship director in the UICOMR Department of Family and Community Medicine.
The program connects classroom learning with real-world health care experiences, which helps students understand and address the barriers faced by under-resourced populations in the Rockford community.
Since the program started in 2024, dozens of community members have taken advantage of the program, according to Dr. Munshi.
