UICOMR researcher cited in guide to help people with intellectual and developmental disabilities
Research conducted by Yovia Xu, PhD, a clinical assistant professor in the UICOMR Department of Health Sciences Education, is cited in a new publication by the American Public Health Association entitled
Getting People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities What They Need: A Plain-Language Introduction for Public Health Workers.
Dr. Xu is the health disparities course director, and her research focuses on the intersection of health disparities and disability. In the Chicago area, she worked on community-based research with underserved immigrant families of children with autism and other developmental disabilities to reduce barriers to health care. Globally, she works with youth with disabilities in China on issues related to disability identity development, community capacity building and health equity.
Dr. Xu received her doctorate in disability studies from the University of Illinois Chicago and a master’s degree in clinical social work from the University of Chicago. She also completed a multidisciplinary training fellowship at UIC through Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disability and Related Disabilities (LEND).
