UICOMR’s Narrative Medicine Organization, a student-led group dedicated to creating a space for narratives and storytelling in medicine, invites students, trainees and faculty to share their stories at the inaugural Vital Voices Storytelling Event.

Share five- to 10-minute personal, unscripted stories from the field of medicine revolving around the theme of “I wasn’t expecting that…”

Stories can be about something unexpected that happened when you first started clerkships, your first day as an attending, or an experience you had before starting medical school. It can be about a serendipitous or surprising encounter with a patient, co-worker or mentor, or a moment that changed your perspective, deeply impacted you or made you smile.

To get an idea of the general format of a medical story, check out The Nocturnists, which is an organization that currently hosts live storytelling events for health care professionals.

S’mores and hot chocolate will be available.

Need time to think about it, or not sure what story to tell? The student-led group is also hosting a casual storytelling workshop where you can “pitch” your story idea and practice giving it in a relaxed setting. This will be a relaxed experience, with a focus on authenticity over perfection. The goal is to tell your story like you would tell it to a group of friends. The date of the workshop is to be determined.
