Chief Residents Selected
The University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford Family Medicine Residency Program announces the selection of Philip Carlson-Dexter, MD, and Kaavya Chivukula, MD, as co-chief residents.

Dr. Carlson-Dexter and Dr. Chivukula are both resident physicians in their third and final year of the residency program and they see patients at the UI Health L.P. Johnson Family Health Center, 1221 State St. As chief residents, they will be involved in administrative duties such as scheduling of the residents, as well as teaching resident physicians and medical students.
Dr. Carlson-Dexter is a graduate of the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford and plans to stay in Rockford as a family medicine physician at SwedishAmerican following graduation from the residency program. Dr. Chivukula is a graduate of American University of Integrated Sciences School of Medicine and is interested in preventive medicine and women’s health. Both are working toward improving the program for residents and building strong relationships with medical students.

The Family Medicine Residency Program has seven first-, second- and third-year resident physicians for a total of 21 in the Rockford-based program. In addition, the first-year residents in the college’s Dixon Rural Training Track and Monroe Rural Family Medicine Residency Program work with the Rockford program for much of their training. All of these resident physicians gain clinical experience in family medicine under the supervision of attending physicians who are faculty of the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford.
