Dr. Gary Anderson Receives Distinguished Service Award
The University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford presented its 2018 Distinguished Service Award to Gary Anderson, MD, during its May 11 convocation ceremony. The evening before that, the graduating students presented him with a Golden Apple Teaching Award from their class, one of several he’s earned over his 34 years as a College of Medicine faculty member.
This Distinguished Service Award is presented each year to a nominee who demonstrates outstanding organization and leadership qualities in committee service, administration, health care and medical education at the college, university or national level.
About Anderson, his nominator, Connie Vitali, said, “I closely observed his unwavering commitment to the practice of pathology, to the College of Medicine, and to the Rockford community in general.”
Dr. Anderson is a College of Medicine Rockford alumnus from the class of 1979. He completed a residency at the University of Iowa in pathology and he joined the faculty in 1984 while working in clinical practice in Rockford. He is currently chair of the college’s Department of Pathology and an associate professor of clinical pathology.
“Dr. Anderson is thoughtful, open to new ideas, and creative. His teaching methods are effective, and his learning environment is open, positive, and non-threatening. He is responsive to student feedback. He is a valued collaborator,” says Vitali.
Anderson was also involved in the creation and implementation of the new Illinois Curriculum for the College of Medicine, contributing to the curriculum and mentoring new faculty.
