Michael Glasser, PhD, retired June 30, 2021, after 43 years of service to the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford.
Dr. Glasser was associate dean for rural health professions, the director of the National Center for Rural Health Professions, a research professor of medical sociology and the Dr. George T. & Mildred A. Mitchell endowed professor.
Among his numerous accomplishments, Dr. Glasser was named the 2019 Faculty of the Year for the UIC College of Medicine. In 2011, the Illinois Rural Health Association recognized Dr. Glasser’s contributions to rural medicine with the Outstanding Award of Merit for Community Service. He also received the Rockford campus Distinguished Faculty Service Award in 2012 for his outstanding contributions to community health. He’s demonstrated leadership for the campus community where he’s served on and chaired many committees as well as the national and international medical community through such endeavors as the editorial board of the Journal of Rural Health since 2005 and as co-editor for the international peer-reviewed WHO-sponsored journal, Education for Health.
“Dr. Glasser is an award-winning faculty member who was instrumental to the development of the RMED Program and the National Center for Rural Health Professions,” says College of Medicine Rockford Regional Dean Alex Stagnaro-Green, MD, MPHE, MHA. “He will leave a legacy of international acclaim he’s brought to the college through his leadership, advocacy, research, service and teaching.”
Another aspect of Dr. Glasser’s legacy will be an endowed professorship, the Michael L. and Susan M. Glasser Professorship in Rural Health Professions Education and Research, which was made possible by a generous gift from an alumnus of the College of Medicine Rockford, Robert Ayers, MD, and his wife Christine Ayers.
Hana Hinkle, PhD, has been named interim director and head of the National Center for Rural Health Professions. She has served as associate director of the National Center for Rural Health Professions since 2016.
