Dr. Jeff Smith is New Chair of Department of Medicine

Jeffrey R. Smith, MD, FACC

The University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford has appointed Jeffrey R. Smith, MD, FACC, chair for the Department of Medicine and Medical Specialties. Dr. Smith is a clinical associate professor in the department and has been on the faculty since 1996.

Dr. Smith has taught medical students and directed cardiology education for the College of Medicine Rockford, earning him the Distinguished Teaching Award in 2010 as well as other recognition. He has served on the college’s Medical Executive Committee and several other committees and task forces.

A cardiologist and regional board member at Mercyhealth in Rockford, Dr. Smith is a graduate of the University of Illinois College of Medicine Chicago. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine and went on to complete fellowships in clinical cardiology and clinical cardiac electrophysiology at Northwestern University.

“We are thrilled to have Dr. Smith as chair of the department he has served so well as a faculty member over the last two decades,” says Alex Stagnaro-Green, MD, MHPE, MHA, regional dean.

Dr. Smith started Sept. 1, replacing Gary Rifkin, MD, who retired the end of August.
