Dr. Raymond Garcia receives Distinguished Service Award from University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford

Raymond Garcia, MD, accepts the Distinguished Service Award from Dean Stagnaro-Green during the Convocation Ceremony.

The Distinguished Service Award is presented to a nominee who demonstrates outstanding organization and leadership qualities in committee service, administration, health care and medical education at UICOMR, the university level and/or nationally. The 2023 Distinguished Service Award recipient is Dr. Raymond Garcia. He received the award during the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford Convocation Ceremony.

Dr. Garcia is a UICOMR class of 1994 alumnus and was the recipient of the David Mortimer Olkon Award for Excellence in Psychiatry and Neurology. He started his psychiatry residency at Chicago’s Rush University in 1997 and served as chief resident in 1998. He’s also board certified in both psychiatry and addiction medicine.

Dr. Garcia came back to Rockford after completing his residency. He currently works at Aspen Counseling and Consulting, in Rockford, and concurrently at Rosecrance Health Network, where he consistently provides outstanding teaching for our medical students at the Rosecrance-Harrison campus. Last year, he became VP of medical services at Rosecrance, where he provides clinical leadership for physicians, nurse practitioners and medical services at all Rosecrance sites. He’s also Chair of the Student Promotions Committee at UICOMR, where he oversees the performance of medical students and provides support if they have issues advancing through the curriculum.

His contributions haven’t gone unnoticed. He earned the Golden Apple for Excellence in Teaching in 2000, a preceptor award from the College of Nursing in Rockford, the UICOMR Distinguished Teaching Award in 2018 and the Nancy Roeske Certificate of Recognition for Excellence in Medical Teaching from the American Psychiatric Association in 2020.

In his nomination letter, his nominators say, “We have no doubt that Dr. Ray Garcia fulfills the criteria for this award. Dr. Garcia demonstrates outstanding organization and leadership qualities in committee service, administration, health care and medical education at UICOMR and the Rockford community. We admire and are deeply grateful for his longstanding commitment.”
