Dr. Verzal named IAFP Teacher of the Year

IAFP Teacher of the Year

The Illinois Academy of Family Physicians selected Rhonda Verzal, MD, FAAFP, as the 2023 Family Medicine Teacher of the Year.

Dr. Verzal is program director of the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford Family Medicine Residency Program and an assistant professor of clinical family medicine in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. She is an attending physician at the UI Health Mile Square Health Center-L.P. Johnson Rockford at 1221 E. State St.

A graduate of the University of Illinois College of Medicine Chicago, Dr. Verzal completed residency training at Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Florida. She joined the faculty of this institution in 2015 and served as associate program director for the Family Medicine & Sports Medicine Residency Program. She also served on the faculty of Florida State University College of Medicine as a clinical assistant professor.

“Dr. Verzal is an outstanding educator and we share in her pride as she is recognized for her broad contributions as an educator,” says Joseph Garry, MD, FAAFP, FACSM, head of the Department of Family and Community Medicine. “Since joining the faculty in 2020, she’s rewritten our residency curriculum, engaged in the education of our medical students, developed new and innovative programs in medical education, and leads the training of 22 young Family Medicine physicians.”
