The 2024 Rural Health Careers Camp took place from Monday, June 24 through Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at Northern Illinois University, in Dekalb. High school students from several rural high schools attended the three-day, two-night camp.
The purpose of the camp was to introduce high school students to several careers in the world of health care. The camp included hands-on activities and labs to help students explore various health care fields, including rural family medicine, respiratory care, dentistry, nutrition/dietetics and emergency medicine.
On Tuesday, June 25, 2024, the campers visited the UIC Health Sciences Campus-Rockford where they rubbed elbows with staff from the Rockford Fire Department and the Winnebago County Coroner. The students also completed rotations in pharmacy, medical biotechnology and the UICOMR simulation lab.
Camp counselors were first-year medical students from the UICOMR’s Rural Medical Education Program (RMED). They led campers through the activities and provided plenty of useful mentorship and advice.
