Rifkin Takes on New College of Medicine Role

Gary Rifkin, MD, FACP, FIDSA, is now chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford.

Rifkin, a professor of clinical medicine and infectious diseases, joined the faculty of the College of Medicine Rockford in 1978 and has served in various roles, including teaching, administration and clinical practice. He’s also served as the vice chair and acting chair for the Department of Medicine. He’s won several university awards, including three Golden Apple Teaching Awards, the Distinguished Service Award, Distinguished Teaching Award and two Council for Excellence in Teaching and Learning Awards.

A graduate of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, Rifkin completed an internship and residency in internal medicine and an infectious disease fellowship at the University of Michigan Medical Center. He is board-certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases and is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the Infectious Diseases Society of America. He maintained a clinical practice in Rockford with Rockford Infectious Disease Consultants and served as physician epidemiologist at several area medical centers from 1978 until 2012.
