Stephanie Calato, MS, LCPC, assistant dean for student affairs

Stephanie Calato, MS, LCPC, assistant dean for student affairs, attended the National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®) Conference on October 3-5, 2024, in Louisville, KY, where she presented at two sessions.

During the first session, Calato and her co-leads discussed the COSA/Next Step 1 Project’s survey, which focuses on the Medical Student Performance Evaluation’s (MSPE) noteworthy characteristics. This session was entitled, “Navigating the Impact of USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination®) Step 1 and COMLEX Level 1 Pass/Fail Scoring on Residency Application: Insights from the NEXT STEP1 Project and MSPE Noteworthy Characteristics Survey.” The packed house provided great feedback and insight.

Addressing these characteristics is part of Catalo’s role as the co-lead on the ‘Next Step 1 Project: Residency Applications’, the AAMC’s (American Association of Medical Colleges) collaboration group, which encompasses 61 schools of undergraduate medical education and graduate medical education students. Calato is working as a co-lead on the ‘Next Step 1 Project-Residency Application and Selection’ as part of the NRMP.

In the second session, Calato and her co-leads presented the CLASS Project’s work regarding the implications of discontinuing the USMLE Step 2-CS (clinical skills) and COMLEX Level 2-PE exams to an engaging audience of medical education participants. Her session was titled “The Impact of Discontinuing USMLE Step 2-CS and COMLEX Level 2-PE upon the Transition from Medical School to Residency.”

The NRMP, or “The Match,” is responsible for placing the nation’s medical school students into clinical residency training programs. Match Day 2025 is on March 21, 2025, when Rockford students will learn, along with the rest of the national senior students, where they will go for residency.
