Niche: Internal medicine, clinical endocrinology, diabetes care and education, clinical skills education, port of care ultrasound and history of medicine and medical humanities.
Research interests:
1993-2010, Multiple phase 3 pharmaceutical trials of diabetic pharmaceuticals (with David Bartels, PharmD, and UIC College of Pharmacy.
Family and interests: I experienced Guillain-Barré paralysis in February 2021, 10 days after a dx of pneumonia with COVID-19. With the help of the UIC faculty and residents and physical therapists at UW Health Swedish American Hospital, Rockford, and UW Health faculty and residents in Josh Medow's Neuro ICU, Madison, WI and UIC faculty and students and physical therapist at Van Matre, Rockford, IL, I now have full mobility and am grateful that I can walk, bike, and swim.
Outside interests: Gardening and church landscaping, choral singing, swimming, monthly Winnebago County senior physician group, volunteer worker on the Illinois and 6 other floats in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade (as a "petal pusher") in Dec., 2022 and 2023.

Have an image library with over 2000 historical images and 30 PowerPoints on history of medicine topics including the histories of medical education in Chicago and Rockford, over 20 original diabetes teaching cases including a 12-case-based curriculum entitled "Types of Diabetes," and simulation protocol for DKA management. Restored donated Phillips HD 11 ultrasound unit for Sim Lab at UIC Health Sciences Campus-Rockford in 2019. Refinished a 19th century doctor's display case located in the Crawford Library of the Health Sciences Rockford and catalogued a collection of historical books and tools from a physician's office in the rural Spoon River region of western Illinois (the Harold Zeniske, Sr. Memorial Collection) in 2015.
