About
Dr. Whalen was born and raised in Old Town, Chicago, to a Serbian mother and American father, alongside his Serbian grandparents who were both physicians and a major source of inspiration during his pursuit of medicine, particularly his grandmother who was a family practitioner on the south side of Chicago. His dad and sister are both veterinarians, but allergies to dogs/cats steered him toward human medicine.
He attended college at Colgate University before going to Belgrade, Serbia, for medical school at the Belgrade Faculty of Medicine, following in the footsteps of both of his maternal grandparents. He met his wife while he was there and his time in Europe spurred a major passion for traveling. Beyond that, he tries to enjoy watching the White Sox, strength training and cooking. He also has a strong passion for patient advocacy, and to that end, is currently a CASA (court-appointed special advocate) in Cook County and assigned to an ongoing case. He wishes to advocate as a medical resident, both for his patients and on a state and federal level.
