Dr. Charles Welford Receives Distinguished Service Award

The University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford presented its 2020 Distinguished Service Award to Charles Welford, MD, a clinical associate professor in the Department of Medicine and Medical Specialties and an internal medicine physician at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center.

This Distinguished Service Award is presented each year to a nominee who demonstrates outstanding organization and leadership qualities in committee service, administration, health care and medical education at the college, university or national level.

After completing a residency in internal medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospitals, Dr. Welford joined the College of Medicine Rockford faculty in1981 as a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Medicine and Medical Specialties. He was promoted to clinical associate professor in 2005. He received the Distinguished Teaching Award in 1992; Golden Apple Teaching Awards in 2017, 2018 and 2020; and many other student council instructor awards. In addition to teaching medical students, he has served the College of Medicine in many positions including being a 33-year member of the Rockford Executive Committee as well as committee service on the Department of Medicine Executive Committee, Dean’s Search Committee, Glenn Netto Scholarship Committee, Rockford Strategic Planning Committee, Committee on Instruction and Appraisal and several curriculum-related committees.

At OSF St. Anthony Medical Center, Dr. Welford has likewise held numerous positions including: chair of the Continuing Medical Education Committee, chair of Medicine, chair of the Critical Care Committee, secretary/treasurer of the medical staff, and he is currently director of medical education and director of graduate medical education.

“In addition to being an excellent clinician and role model, Dr. Welford has served the University of Illinois College of Medicine as a whole in an exemplary manner and is deserving of the 2020 Distinguished Service Award,” says Gary Rifkin, MD, chair of the Department of Medicine and Medical Specialties.
