Dr. Vitali named director of clinical pathology

The University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford is proud to announce that Connie Vitali, MD, has been named director of clinical pathology, effective November 1, 2016. In this new role, Dr. Vitali will be part of a team developing and implementing curriculum for Phase 1 medical education, addressing basic principles needed for the practice of clinical medicine. In addition, she will help guide development of the longitudinal Healthcare Systems curriculum.

“We are delighted to have Dr. Vitali expand her role with the College of Medicine. There are exciting transformations happening on campus and Dr. Vitali will play an important part in our curricular change and development,” said Alex Stagnaro-Green, MD, MPHE, Dean, University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford.

“Being able to teach at the University of Illinois College of Medicine was a significant factor in my decision to move to the Rockford area in 1995, and I have enjoyed being part-time faculty. I believe that the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford is such a strong community asset, and I am so proud of our students. I am thankful for the opportunity to pursue a “second career” as a full-time educator and am excited to be able to focus my energy on medical education,” said Dr. Vitali.

A graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago, Dr. Vitali has served the College of Medicine at Rockford since 1995, advancing from Clinical Instructor to Clinical Associate Professor, all while maintaining active medical staff membership at Rockford Health System and serving as its Chair for the Department of Laboratory Medicine. In 2006, Dr. Vitali served as the president of the medical staff. She is a former trustee and board chair for Rockford Health System and former trustee for Mercyhealth. Dr. Vitali serves on the American Hospital Association’s Committee on Governance. In addition, Dr. Vitali is a member and former president of the Spectrum Progressive School of Rockford board of directors.

Dr. Vitali was named 2015 Woman Manager of the Year by Rockford Chamber of Commerce, earned the Jack Packard Quality Champion Award from Rockford Health System in 2013, has received three Golden Apple teaching awards, and received the Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award in 1999.
