Waitzkin Book Talk

The University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford will host Howard Waitzkin, MD, PhD, who will talk about his new book “Health Care Under the Knife: Moving Beyond Capitalism for Our Health” on Monday, Nov. 26, at noon. The program will be held in room A115 on the UIC Health Sciences Campus-Rockford at 1601 Parkview Dr.

The book is “a welcome and invaluable contribution to our national dialogue about fixing a broken health care system both locally and nationally,” according to Midwest Book Review.

Dr. Waitzkin is an adjunct professor in the Department of Medicine and Medical Specialties at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford and a distinguished professor emeritus in the Department of Sociology at the University of New Mexico. Waitzkin received both his medical degree and his doctorate in sociology from Harvard University. He has practiced as a primary care physician in internal medicine and has taught social medicine at a variety of clinics and universities, including the United Farm Workers Clinic in Salinas, California; La Clínica de la Raza in Oakland, California; Stanford University Medical Center; Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston; and the University of California. Waitzkin joined the faculty of the University of New Mexico in 1997 and the UICOMR faculty in 2015.

The book talk is free and open to the public and is sponsored by medical students in the Organized Medicine Interest Group and Journal Club and co-sponsored by Rockford Urban Ministries.
