Hugh Clements-Jewery, PhD, a teaching associate professor and physiology course director in the Department of Health Sciences Education, received the Distinguished Teaching Award during the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford’s Convocation Ceremony on Friday, April 26, 2024.

Each year at the Convocation Ceremony, the Distinguished Teaching Award is presented to a faculty member who has demonstrated a longstanding history of outstanding interest in our medical students and a strong commitment to medical education.

Dr. Clements-Jewery has a bachelor’s degree in physiological sciences from the University of Oxford and a doctorate in biomedical sciences from King’s College London, in London, England.

Since joining the Rockford campus, he has become a certified trainer-consultant in team-based learning and teaches physiology to Phase I medical students. As director of the Phase I curriculum, he informs faculty how the curriculum was built and ensures they have the tools and contacts to be successful in their roles.

He receives high ratings on student evaluations and his creative problem-solving skills have improved class attendance and engagement.

In his nomination letter, his nominator says, “He is a cornerstone of our curriculum, our faculty development team and our student support structure.”
