The ideal hospice and palliative medicine specialist uses exceptional communication skills together with outstanding clinical skills and extensive medical knowledge to support and guide each patient and family through the course of serious illness, while ensuring optimal pain and symptom management. What is more, the ideal HPM physician is also a well-rounded, resilient, skilled, and compassionate physician, team member, and teacher, as well as being a visionary leader armed with the knowledge, skills, and vision to help build and improve hospice and palliative programs. Achieving this task takes hard work, compassion, and dedication, but also requires outstanding training and mentoring.

UICOMR, in association with SwedishAmerican A Division of UW Health, is pleased to offer an ACGME accredited subspecialty program in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. 2018-2019 was our first year training a fellow; we welcome applicants for the subsequent calendar years.
Our goals are to:
- To develop expertise in the fundamentals of HPM via the ACGME domains of patient care, medical knowledge, communication skills, professionalism, systems-based practice, and practice-based learning and improvement.
- To develop a knowledge of the challenges of rural HPM delivery.
- To develop and HPM physician who provides compassionate, patient centered care while maintaining balance in self-care and professional boundaries.
- To develop leaders in the field of HPM who focus on clinical care, education, clinical research or quality improvement.
Our fellowship consists of a one-year training program which follows completion of an ACGME accredited fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. We adhere to the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) policies, and applications are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
