The University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Department of Family and Community Medicine hosts the annual Health Equity Summit in the spring semester.  The half-day event has focused on the health of ethnic and racial minorities; individuals with developmental disabilities; individuals who self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual+, voices of black women and maternal health and mortality.

The inaugural Health Equity Summit was held on March 4, 2023, and focused on the health of ethnic and racial minorities; individuals with developmental disabilities; and individuals who self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual+.

Daphne Smith Marsh, PharmD, BC-ADM, CDCES, UICOMR faculty member Yovia (Yue) Xu, PhD, MSW, and representatives from the LIAM Foundation provided excellent resources for attendees.

The 2nd Annual Health Equity Summit was held March 28, 2024, and focused on maternal health and mortality.

Renee Crichlow, MD, FAAFP, president of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, chief medical officer of Codman Square Health Center and vice-chair of Health Equity, Department of Family Medicine, Boston University Medical School, led a presentation on Maternal Health and Mortality: Are There Equitable Answers? Stacie Geller, PhD, director of Obstetrics & Gynecology Research Division, G. William Arends Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology, professor of medicine Division of Academic Internal Medicine, director of Center for Research on Women & Gender, University of Illinois College of Medicine Chicago, presented Centering the Voices of Black Women. 

Drs. Crichlow and Geller were joined in a panel discussion with Gloria Elam, MD, MPH, associate dean of Diversity & Inclusion, associate professor of clinical obstetrics & gynecology, associate head of Clinical Affairs and director of Center for Women’s Health at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Chicago; and Karie E Stewart, MPH, CNM, APRN-FPA, FACNM, certified nurse midwife, University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System.

The Health Equity Summit provided excellent resources for the roughly 88 students, faculty, residents and community health professionals in attendance. The panel discussions and presentations were focused on maternal health and mortality.
