Curriculum by Year
In 2016, the University of Illinois College of Medicine began an intensive curricular renewal process, designed to integrate teaching of basic sciences with clinical applications, to enhance student-directed learning, and to utilize active learning methodologies. Designed collaboratively by faculty across all three U of I campuses (Chicago, Rockford, and Peoria), the new Illinois Medicine Curriculum is organized into three phases: Phase 1 preclerkship curriculum, Phase 2 core clerkships plus electives, Phase 3 career pathway selectives, subinternship, and intra- and extramural electives. Woven throughout the 4-year curriculum are five major themes: Foundational Knowledge; Clinical Practice of Medicine; Health, Illness & Society; Health Care Systems; and Professional Development.
